Ask a layperson what they know about artificial intelligence, and they will start explaining about technology that sounds as if it was lifted out of a sci-fi novel. The concept of AI in an average person’s mind is what they have seen in the movies and television shows, or read about in books. Characters like the T-100 and other automatons found within the Terminator franchise, or the more recent TV adaptation of the hit 1973 film “Westworld” are what people think AI looks or will look like, but what they don’t know is that artificial intelligence is all around them, powering devices and services that see common use in their daily lives. While still being perfected, it has come a long way in recent years.

Many times when you visit a website, a chat box pops up where a customer services representative asks if there’s any way they could help you. You might think it is an actual person behind it, but no. It is an AI powered chatbot, whose purpose is to initiate contact with you, and answer any general and common questions. If the conversation starts getting productive, either the chat will be handed over to an actual agent, or the chatbot might generate a ticket and tell you that the company will contact you later. Such examples of artificial intelligence in business is getting more and more common.

Centralized Home Control Systems

AI driven home control systems which learn the climate, lighting conditions, and many other factors based on individual preference, and when integrated with an IoT based home automation system, can be used to manage things like room climate depending on which member of the household is in that room, as well as many other things around the house.

Autonomous Drones

Drones that can autonomously navigate to their destination and back successfully, have been in use for a little time now, but not commercially. While completely autonomous drones are still some way off, many commercially available drones are autonomous enough to maintain their state while flying in order to allow the flyer some rest. Fully autonomous drones are also in the works by different research teams, such as Amazon, who will use these drones to perform quick deliveries.

Mapping apps like Google Maps or Waze, and ride-sharing apps like Uber use artificial intelligence to find the optimal route for your trip, using data points such as traffic density, distance, road closures etcetera. Not only do they use it to find the optimal route, it keeps updating the routes in real time, with updates regarding delays, traffic and other issues being relayed to the viewer almost instantly.

Surveillance

AI based tracking systems used in South Korea and China to track people not following Covid-19 regulations for prosecution have been very successful. With techniques such as language processing, image detection and object detection, governments around the world can hire any AI solutions company to develop products which can successfully track anyone.

Healthcare

Examples of artificial intelligence in healthcare is fast gaining ground. With multiple applications being developed for domains such as diagnostic aids, finding the right drug/s for a confusing set of symptoms, personalized patient care devices etcetera, more and more applications to integrate artificial intelligence into healthcare are being developed to improve the quality of medical care that can be given to a patient.

To conclude, AI is fast reforming our lives, although it still is hindered by the limitations due to resources such as costly computation powers, and interconnectivity issues.
